Message from Principal Stoffal regarding March 14th

Dear Buchser Families,

Most folks are aware of a school walk-out that is scheduled for Wednesday, March 14, 2018. This is a student-led event that was organized to show support to the victims of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

Some Buchser students are organizing a walk-out to show support of this national moment on March 14th. We want to be very clear about what to expect:

  • Staff will permit students to walk out of class at 10:00 AM, only if they wish to participate in the 17 minutes of respectful silence.
  • Students are to stay on campus and follow all other school rules; students who leave campus or in any way disturb the dignity of this event with misconduct will have the expected consequences for ditching or misconduct.
  • Teachers will remain in classrooms with students who are opting out of the 17 minutes of silence.
  • Students will gather in the main quad for the 17 minutes of silence.
  • They will then return to class at the end of the 17 minutes.
  • Administration, counselors, and available staff will be out with the students to supervise for safety.

I want to emphasize that this is a student-led event, and we are required to allow students to hold it. The adults who work at the school are there to maintain safety during the event, not to partake in its organization.

The idea of holding the 17 minutes of silence after school was rejected by the majority of folks who are listening to the students' concerns.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Monica Stoffal, Principal
