How do I register my incoming 6th grader for Music?
You may have received a form in 5th grade asking whether your student wished to participate in the Music Program. If you said yes, then your student may be enrolled in a Music Program class already automatically.
If not, or you are learning of the Buchser Music program after the first day of school, contact the School. For questions related to this or any school registration issues at Buchser, please call or email Julie Milazzo at (408) 423-3006 or jmilazzo@scusd.net.
Incoming 6th graders often join the program in the first few weeks of the school year.
What is the Buchser Music Association (BMA)?
Buchser Music Association (BMA) – a.k.a. “The Boosters” – A parent organization
supporting the Buchser Music program through fundraising and event coordination.
How can I volunteer? How can I help?
- Come to a BMA meeting, last Wednesday of the month, 7:00 pm, Buchser Library. And check the calendar. There are a variety of "positions" in the BMA. Find out about them and help out, or shadow someone whose student is leaving the program next year.
- Do you have an idea for fund raising? Come to a BMA meeting and propose it.
- Look for emails from bmaboosters@gmail.com asking for volunteers at particular events -- popping Kettle Korn at the Santa Clara Art and Wine festival, for example.
- Come to the Disneyland Informational Meeting (usually in September, check the calendar) and find out about being a chaperone on this wonderful trip.
What is the practice time commitment?
Below are the practice times the Music Director recommends in order to advance:
- For the very beginner: 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
- For the intermediate player: 30 to 45 minutes a day, 6 days a week minimum.
- For the advanced player: 45 minutes to 1 hour a day, 6 days a week. This is especially important for those students who are contemplating honor band or who are preparing for solo competition.
Lesson and Rehearsal time are not considered practice time.
Does the School provide an instrument?
The school has a limited supply of instruments. Talk to the Music Director about borrowing one from the school. Families can also provide their student's instrument.

What is the Disneyland field trip?
Buchser music groups have a long standing tradition of traveling to Disneyland each May to perform. It’s a great opportunity for our students to have a memorable trip, form friendships, and show off their skills to a Disneyland audience. Students will travel in chartered buses to Anaheim, and stay at a hotel across the street from Disneyland. Parent chaperones supervise the trip.
All eligible students are allowed to go on the trip regardless of their family’s ability to contribute financially. However, if not enough families make contributions, or participate in our Disney fundraisers, the trip will be canceled. Fundraising alone doesn’t pay for this trip; we rely mostly on family contributions. A few years ago, this trip was cancelled because the amount of fundraising and family contributions was not enough to pay for the trip.
What is the uniform requirement?
Your student must have a uniform. We will be simplifying the uniforms this year by having 1 uniform for ALL musical groups.
Information on uniform requirements is in the document linked below:
